Democratizing Justice

Access to legal recourse in Pakistan is, unfortunately, the privilege of the few.

KAS Access-to-justice, a Boon Initiative, is focused on the democratisation of legal services in Pakistan, starting with the city of Karachi. We aim to make legal representation accessible to those who need to have recourse to the law, but lack the means for a lawyer.

We bring together a network of sponsors, willing to provide funding for deserving cases, and a list of viable cases that have been evaluated and triaged after having been brought to our attention through our network of referrals. Once matched with funding, we support these cases from start to finish through our in-house legal team.

A long way from Riyasat-e-Madina

There are a 2 formal vehicles for access to legal aid in Pakistan: The Pakistan Bar Council Free Legal Aid Rules and the government funded Access-to- justice development fund.  Both are riddled with hard to navigate processes, red-tape, and little to no guarantee of quality of service. In fact, according to the Law and Justice Commission of Pakistan 91% of the funds allocated to  the District Legal Empowerment Committees in Sindh between 2012-2016 remain unspent. Whilst representation in criminal cases get the bulk share of what free services are provided, civil justice is crippled. Overburdened by bureaucracy and lack of awareness of legal rights and due process, this results in increased vulnerability. The weakest are the least protected.
